Boston Red Sox cruise past Detroit Tigers 6-3 – MLB Update
Tim Wakefield continued his pitching wizardry and Carl Crawford homered to help Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 at Comerica Park, Detroit on Friday, May 27.
Wakefield pitched seven solid innings to earn the 12th win for Boston in the last 14 games.
"I'm just doing what I've always done -- trying to help my team win games," said Wakefield, who picked up his 195th career win.
Dustin Pedroia gave a rather eloquent note and said, "In a way, you are amazed by him, but in another way, you just expect him to be here forever."
Boston was barely ready for an easy show-down when Friday’s game kicked off. When Rick Porcello, the starting pitcher of the Detroit Tigers came on the pitching mound, Kevin Youkilis was the first to score on his wild pitch. However, Miguel Cabrera did not
take much time to level the score with his single to centre when Wakefield was charged with pitching.
After allowing the first run in the first inning, Porcello then threw effective pitches to contain the Red Sox hitters. Jhonny Peralta took Detroit’s lead to 2-1 in the second inning which was not to last long. In the very next inning, the third of the game,
Boston literally pounded the Tigers defence. The third inning brought a total of five runs which included four hits. Jacoby Ellsbury did it first with a homer. His hit levelled the score while Youkilis got a two-run homer to take the score to 4-2.
Carl Crawford had another hit to earn two for the Red Sox, taking the score to an irreversible 6-2. The lead then was Wakefield’s responsibility to keep intact. He undeniably succeeded in doing that, as he limited the Tigers’ hitters to pave the way for
the Red Sox victory. Detroit, in the meanwhile, utterly failed to stage their come-back in the game.
As Daniel Bard replaced Wakefield, Bard effortlessly threw a shut-out inning. With a 6-2 lead into the inning, Jonathan Papelbon gave up two hits in the ninth inning and allowed only one run. Having succeeded in limiting the Tigers’ hitters, the Red Sox
won the game 6-3.
