Boston Red Sox crush Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 – MLB News
Boston Red Sox produced another magical performance, simply outclassing the Philadelphia Phillies 3-9, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday, May 27 in the opening game of their two-match series of
the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher, Alfredo Aceves, looked full of confidence on the mound as he allowed just seven hits and one run in six solid innings to grab his second win of the season. Striking our batters at regular intervals,
he helped his team dictate terms early on. Relief pitcher Clayton Mortensen and Andrew Miller did not show any sign of nerves as he combined to give up just two runs in three innings of relief.
"He took tonight as an opportunity to make an impression," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He made a solid one. It's a night-and-day difference."
"He looked like he was out there with a purpose," catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said.
"In this ballpark, when you're down four, maybe five runs, there's still a chance. But when it's 8-1, it's in another zone," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "The ball Freddy hit when it was 8-1 might have
gotten us close, but the guy made a pretty nice play on it."
Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to give Boston the early 3-0 lead. Jacoby Ellsbury and Jarrod Saltalamacchia also made useful contributions with the bat to help Red
Sox post a decent total on the board.
It was an important win for the Red Sox who have looked in top form since the start of the season. Former Manager Bobby Valentine was fired after the Red Sox finished at the bottom of the American League East
Division standings table last year.
Red Sox’s management made some expensive moves during the offseason, which includes hiring new Manager, John Farrell, who has used his resources brilliantly this year. It will not be wrong to say that all those
efforts made during the offseason are paying dividends. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can continue their marvellous winning streak to claim the AL East pennant.
