Boston Red Sox crushed by Texas Rangers 1-9 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox received a 1-9 hammering at the hands of Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas on Monday, July 23 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Red Sox’s starting pitcher Felix Doubront got a taste of what he can expect to face in the upcoming few weeks. He allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings to take his fifth loss of the season.
Rangers’ starter Scott Feldman, on the other hand, gave up just a run in seven innings for his fourth win of the season.
"My mechanics felt pretty good," Feldman said after the game. "I tried not to think about the extended rest I had there. I tried to go out there and compete."
"He kept the ball down and worked off the corners," Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks said in a post game interview. "He didn't leave anything over the middle that we could hit."
Bobby Valentine and company, who were humiliated by the Blue Jays in their previous series, were hoping to get off to a positive start against the Rangers. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia did exactly that as he homered to right-centre in the second inning
to put the Red Sox 1-0 ahead.
However, apart from Saltalamacchia none of the hitters could score any runs and the Rangers bounce back strongly in the third to dent their opponents’ confidence levels. Elvis Andrus reached on infield single to second and Josh Hamilton doubled to deep-left
in the third to help Texas claim a 3-1 lead.
"Tremendous outing," Texas manager Ron Washington said with a smile on his face. "We certainly needed him to give us a chance tonight and he went way beyond what we expected."
Michael Young made a useful contribution in the third and Mike Napoli connected for a two run shot in the sixth inning to help the Rangers establish complete control over the contest. Ian Kinsler and Hamilton continued the good offensive work with RBI singles
in the sixth inning and the Rangers took an impassable 9-1 lead.
