Boston Red Sox defeat Baltimore Orioles 8-6, sweep series 4-0 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles as they defeated them 8-6 in the fourth game on Sunday, July 10 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
The game was intense and high-scoring in the early stages but the Orioles could not really take the momentum ahead with them and were pressed hard by the Red Sox relief pitchers.
Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez gave Boston a healthy start, both adding one run at the bottom of the first inning.
The Orioles replied audaciously as they unglued Red Sox starter Kyle Weiland for six runs at the top of the second inning. Derrek Lee initiated the thrashing with a 369-feet home-run to take his season’s tally to nine. Matt Wieters, Mark Reynolds, Nolan
Reimold, Robert Andino and Nick Markakis were among the others who scored in the second inning. With the score at 6-2, Baltimore had a comfortable four-run lead early in the game.
This lead, however, was not long-lived as Mitch Atkins, the starter for Baltimore, replicated Weiland’s effort and gave away four runs in the second inning to wipe out the hard-earned lead. Atkins was immediately taken-off after returning figures of seven
hits and six runs along with six errors in 1.2 innings.
Weiland made a strong come-back and pitched two more scoreless innings before handing over the reins to Alfredo Aceves in the fifth inning. Aceves was brilliant with his spell at the mound as he pitched three innings with sheer intelligence. He did not concede
any hit or any run and was awarded with a win, his fourth for the season.
The game shifted gears after the second inning run-scoring spree by the Red Sox. Three of the four runs came in as homers. Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis hammered home-runs before Adrian Gonzalez added his second run for the game to equal
the score.
Jeremy Guthrie replaced Atkins on the mound but could not hold on for long. Guthrie leaked one run in the fourth inning to hand Boston a lead that became permanent for the Orioles.
J.D. Drew then locked the final score for the Red Sox in the seventh inning. Baltimore never had a chance to register a come-back as the Boston pitchers learned quickly from the second inning mess. The game finished with the score at 8-6.
Red Sox are now rocketing ahead in the league, as they are 55-35 for the season and have a 9-1 win-loss record in the previous ten games. Also to their advantage, they are now on a six-game winning streak and a stop to this seems a remote possibility.
The Orioles are exactly the other side of the coin with a 36-52 record for the season and a 1-9 win-loss record in the previous ten games. The Orioles are on a seven game losing-streak and need an urgent end to this for things to get better, or at least
change direction.
