Boston Red Sox defeat Chicago Cubs 15-5 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox unleashed a flurry of runs on Friday to beat the Chicago Cubs by 15-5 on Friday, May 20.
The avid Boston fans watched with awe as their hitters mercilessly charged the cornered Cubs’ bullpen.
Chicago, lost their balance once Boston’s offence sparked with fury, as the Red Sox hit two home runs and six doubles to shatter the Cubs’ hopes of a graceful loss, if not a difficult win.
“That's where we want to be," said Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who had two hits, including a homer. "We know we've got a great team. There's no reason why we shouldn't be in first place right now. We want to be in first place and stay in first place the whole
year."
Adrian Gonzalez had no less than four hits including four RBIs. Jacoby Ellsbury had on his credit three hits and Kevin Youkilis struck two doubles with a two-run homer to earn their seventh straight win. The Red Sox, it is important to remember, were humiliatingly
defeated in 10 out of 12 games they played when the 2011 Major League Baseball season commenced.
Since the 1918 World Series, this was Chicago’s first visit to Boston. Nonetheless, there was hardly any enthralling enthusiasm after the game by the Cubs.
"(This) put an end to my enthusiasm for this momentous occasion," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "They're tough. I feel really good about us offensively and we're doing a good job against left-handed starters. But, four errors isn't going to get it done."
Back in the 1918 Series when the two teams confronted each other, the Red Sox succeeded in winning the series in six games.
Most importantly, Boston have now got their form back, as they were struggling a great deal with the start of the season. Such was their performance that hardly anyone could safely predict that they would be able to prove their mettle anymore.
Nonetheless, Friday’s game established evidence of their competitive superiority as a team. Adrian Gonzalez, whom the Red Sox brought in their fold for $154-million for seven years, laid the foundation of a solid game and struck a two-run homer to give an
early lead. He had his second homer in the fourth inning. To make sure he does not leave behind, Gonzalez had his third two-run homer in the fifth inning.
The Red Sox offence was literally invincible on Friday night. Youkilis played his part too with his two-run homer in the fourth inning. Carl Crawford and Ellsbury had their individual two-run homers in the eighth inning and all was lost for Cubs’ defence.
Cubs tried Doug Davis, Scott Maine, James Russell, Jeff Samardzija from their bullpen, but all collapsed like a bulging wall, clearing Boston’s way to a 15-5 victory.
