Boston Red Sox defeat Minnesota Twins 5-1 – MLB News
Boston Red Sox showed just what they are capable of, as they secured another comfortable 5-1 win against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, May 19, in the finale of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Red Sox, who had a forgettable last year, have looked in top form since the start of 2013 regular season. A lot of credit should be given to new Manager, John Farrell, for using his resources to great effect. Without a shadow of doubt, the Red Sox have some of best pitching and hitting line-up in their side and it will be interesting to see if they can extend their winning streak to consolidate their position at the top of American League East Division standings table.
Twins, on the other hand, will be looking to learn from their mistakes to have any chance of making it to the playoffs. Setting realistic goals can help them considerably in long term. It will not be wrong to say that they have a very slim chance of making it to the post season but they can certainly make themselves proud by bringing some consistency in their results.
Red Sox’s starting pitcher, John Lackey, displayed some top quality pitching skills, as he allowed just one hit and one run in six solid innings to grab his second win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he created all sorts of problems for the Twins’ batting line-up.
Will Middlebrooks provided a perfect start to his side, as he homered to right centre in the second innings. Dustin Pedroia hit a two run home run to left in the bottom of the ninth to wrap up an impressive win for his team.
"Watched 'The Sandlot.' I hadn't seen that in a while," he said before getting back to talking about his performance. "I wanted to go at least another inning. I was definitely frustrated a little bit not to keep going. But winning the game is all that really matters."
"We didn't really come up with key hits when we needed to or when we wanted to," Twins outfielder Chris Parmelee said. "It's tough to win a ballgame when you don't have any clutch hits."
Relief pitchers, Andrew Miller, Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa, made useful contributions, as the Red Sox held on to their four run lead. For the Twins, starter Pedro Hernandez took his first loss of the season after he allowed nine hits and three runs in just over four innings. Hernandez displayed top quality pitching skills on his previous two appearances and it will be great to see if he can regroup and fight back to help the Twins get back on the winning road.
