Boston Red Sox defeat New York Yankees 4-0 – MLB Update
Josh Beckett got an impressive ten strike-outs as the Boston Red Sox achieved a 4-0 triumph over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, Boston on Sunday, April 10.
The Red Sox hurler, making his second start of the season, tossed eight shut-out innings, allowed only two hits and walked just one. Beckett recorded his name as the third starter in the Red Sox who permitted just two hits or fewer for at least 10 strikeouts
against the Yankees since 1920.
The triumph also fashioned a reprieve in the Red Sox campsite as they were approaching home after seven defeats, a second worst record since 1945. However, Beckett washed up all the wounds and gained the form that made him star before an injury-stricken
2010 in which he remained 6-6 with a 5.76 ERA.
Beckett dominated from the start and did not provide any room to the Yankees strong batting line-up that incorporates Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and veteran Alex Rodriguez. Beckett sent four of the first seven batters out with strikes, before he received
a hit from Eric Chavez and Brett Gardner grounded into a double play.
Josh taking advantage of the already gained momentum struck-out Derek Jeter to start the fourth then walked Mark Teixeira, who stole second base on Robinson Cano’s line drive to right. At the end of the fourth, Curtis Granderson became the next victim of
Beckett’s fastballs, who also retired Nick Swisher on a ground ball.
The Red Sox achieved a 1-0 lead in third but could not widen the advantage as they were unable to avail six opportunities. However, they managed to post two more runs in seventh inning when Marco Scutaro touched to left for an RBI double. Boston increased
the lead to 4-0 in the eighth with Kevin Youkilis’ led off walk followed by Ortiz double to centre-field.
On the other, the Yankees’ starting pitcher Carsten Charles Sabathia struggled with his arm, pitched just over five innings allowing nine hits and one run. Joba Chamberlain who relieved Sabathia in the middle, handed the game into Boston’s hands allowing
two costly runs in just under an innings.
Beckett’s performance was brilliant as he managed to contain some of the highest rated offensive players in Major League Baseball. The Red Sox put in a tremendous team effort to support the hard work done by Beckett with runs. The Yankees struggled throughout
the game, as they were unable to get their offence going against the pitching of Beckett. The Red Sox have sent a clear message of their dominant form and their ability to win big games either with the bat or the ball.
