Boston Red Sox defeat New York Yankees 6-4 - MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox carried their winning impetus in the fourth-straight game as they defeated the New York Yankees 6-4 in the series opener at Yankee Stadium on Monday, June 7 to achieve a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
Entered in the first inning with a strong batting line-up, the Red Sox took the game into their control in a dominating manner. Jacoby Ellsbury launched a dazzling 403-feet long one-run homer off the Yankees’ starter Freddy Garcia to open the game. It provided
the batters such a momentum that they blistered two more strokes for two RBI singles. Adrian Gonzalez stroked to the deep centre-field while Kevin Youkilis hit a sacrifice fly to elevate the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the first inning.
Despite getting a 1-0 lead, the Red Sox starting hurler, Jon Lester lost his swinging pitches and gave away a single to Robinson Cano to cut the lead to 1-3. However, the Red Sox managed to take it to 4-1 with an RBI single from Dustin Pedroia in the top
of the second inning.
This time Lester recuperated in a promising manner and held the Yankees scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when he gave away an RBI to Nick Swisher after David Ortiz launched a tremendous 359-feet long two-run homer off the Yankees’ reliever
Hector Noesi. At the end of this inning, the Red Sox were leading the game 6-3 and they kept it until the Yankees made their fourth run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In his 13th start of the season, the 27-year-old left-hand pitcher scattered three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck-out five batters over six innings to earn his eighth win of the season. All of his pitches were in the right location,
but one went wrong when he hurt Mark Teixeira, who has a bruise on his right knee after getting a fastball.
Red Sox relievers Bobby Jenks, Matt Albers and Daniel Bard did not go for any runs over their small innings while closer Jonathan Papelbon consumed a run over one inning to save his 12th game in 2011.
Garcia, on the other hand, had the worst outing of the season with four runs on four hits over just one innings. He also walked three batters and lost his fifth game of the series with a 3.86 ERA. However, he received perfect back up from reliever Luis Ayala,
who tossed one inning without allowing any runs.
Tossing six innings for the first time as a closer in this season, Noesi went for two runs on three hits, walked one and struck-out one batter to strive hard to take his team back into game but he did not received any support from a strong batting line-up.
In the second game of the series, the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi must be looking to assemble his batting line-up for the better result.
