Boston Red Sox defeat Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox put in a brilliant performance to defeat Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 at Fenway Park, Boston on Monday, April 18
Daisuke Matsuzaka had a tremendous performance with seven unhittable and unplayable innings of elusive fastballs. Blue Jays’ batters were helplessly left watching as the ball moved past them.
Matsuzaka’ solo show with the ball not only stirred awe but also won the admiration of the Red Sox’s former pitching coach, John Farrell, who frankly admitted his dexterity with ball. "He threw a very good game," Farrell said. "He's had a lot of success
against Toronto in the past and he's used his fastball effectively. He did that today and we weren't able to put good swings on it."
The seven shutout innings, which only had one hit in them, were Matsuzaka’s best and enabled the team to win their third consecutive game on the home ground. "If I did pitch badly," Matsuzaka said, "I thought there wouldn't be the next chance."
Daisuke began the game throwing against Yunel Escobar. His fastball gathered pace with each passing delivery. He did, however, get a hit when Jose Bautista singled to center, without a score. Making a promising start, Jed Lowrie of Boston took on Ricky Romero,
who had come to pitch for Toronto. Lowrie singled to right where J. Drew and Dustin Pedroia scored, taking David Ortiz to second and simultaneously advanced to third making it 2-0 by the end of first inning.
The 2-0 lead renewed the zeal in Matsuzaka who then was unhittable. He rendered the Jays’ batters unable to hit and score until the third inning when Boston scored their third run as Ortiz singled to right on Romero’s fastball as Kevin Youkilis scored. Matsuzaka
was then able to develop tremendous pressure on the Blue Jays. While Matsuzaka was mercilessly rampaging, Boston’s Lowrie once again took on Romero in the fifth inning, as he homered to left where David scored. The lead, by then, was 5-0.
The sixth inning once again turned out to be eventful as Youkilis took to task Luis Perez who had come out to pitch for Toronto. He homered to right where Adrian Gonzalez scored. Carl Crawford doubled to left where Lowrie scored.
The seven shutout innings that Matsuzaka threw were enough to shatter the hopes of the Blue Jays for a competitive game, if not a avoiding the third consecutive defeat. Octavio Dotel who came to pitch for the Blue Jays was then capitalised on by Jacoby Ellsbury,
as homered to right that took the Red Sox score to 9-0 in the seventh inning. Toronto made its last faint attempt in the ninth inning when Escobar homered to left center at Tim Wakefield’s fastball. Wakefield concluded the game with a 9-1 victory for the Red
Sox.
