Boston Red Sox defeat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox starter, Jon Lester had a splendid day with the ball against the Los Angeles Angels, as the pitcher struck out eleven batters to clinch a 7-3 triumph for the club at Fenway Park on Tuesday, May 3.
Lester tossed some brilliant pitching to impress his manager Terry Francona, who praised Lester saying, "He pitched so well after that he gave us a chance. We did not do anything early.”
Jon pitched seven innings, gave just one run over six hits, allowed one walk and one earned run while taking out eleven batters. His performance earned him his fourth win with a 2.33 ERA.
The pitcher also outclassed the Angels’ starter Dan Haren, who landed at the plate with a 1.76 ERA and remained scoreless in his first five innings.
Lester expressed his excitement and said, "It's fun to have those battles every once in a while and see who's going to make the first mistake. I did early. We just tried to hang around the best we could and keep them within striking distance."
Jon allowed his only run, when Mark Trumbo touched his loose pitch over the Green Monster and took the Angels 1-0 in the second. Lester did not lose his nerves and held the other Angels hitless until the seventh, his last inning.
Haren too was impressive in pitching as he held Boston hitless in his first five innings and took out eight batters. However, he lost his momentum in the sixth and gave two RBI singles each to Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez and Jed Lowrie.
Dan then seemed to lose his momentum, as in the seventh, he gave a third RBI single and in the next inning he went for huge homer by Gonzalez.
The Angels’ skipper, Mike Scioscia relieved Haren with Hisanori Takahashi in order to stop the momentum gained by Boston, but the move did not bring positive results for the Angels. Boston’s David Ortiz launched a homer on the first pitch he faced and took
his club to a 5-1 lead. After a few pitches, Marco Scutaro took the Boston’s lead to 7-1, hammering a third homer of the inning.
Though the game has gone into Boston’s favour, yet Haren spoke some firing words for Lester.
Haren said of the Lester’s performance, "It's not losing 15 out of 16 to, no disrespect, like the Mariners or the Pirates. It is the Boston Red Sox. They are a good ball club. In order to do 15 out of 16 you have to have a little luck on your side. A lot
of things have to happen, because it's not that easy."
Erick Aybar and Mark Trumbo both hit RBI singles each in the ninth inning for the Angels.
