Boston Red Sox defence prevails as Los Angeles Angels lose 7-0 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox defence was just too strong as they contained Los Angeles Angels for a 7-0 victory at Angel Stadium, Anaheim on Sunday, April 24.
Following what seemed an utterly disappointing 2-10 start, the Red Sox won eight of last nine matches it has played on Sunday when the team beat the Angels. The victory also put the finishing touch on the four-game sweep of the struggling Angeles. One of
the most expensive franchises in baseball history, the Red Sox performance was a manifestation of exquisite qualities that the team possesses.
Sunday’s game had more than one hero. First, it was John Lackey who, circulating his arm briskly with swift speed of fastballs, pitched eight unplayable innings. The Angels, from the start were not comfortable and it culminated with their inability to put
up a strong offence. The vulnerability of the Angels’ offence was effectively used to advantage by Lackey, further strengthening the starting rotation of Boston.
"I've won a few games in this stadium for sure, said Lackey.”This is a great place to pitch, especially with that ocean air coming through here a little bit. But, really, if you look at their lineup today, there are not too many guys that I played with for
an extended period of time."
Carl Crawford hit his first home-run for his team, as Adrian Gonzalez had two RBIs out of three hits that he struck. The offence filled the Boston team manager with pride. "We've squeaked out about as many wins as you could expect from having so many issues
on the offensive side right now," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Do we need more offense? Yes.”
The game began aggressively with Gonzalez doubling to centre where Ellsbury scored only to be followed by David Ortiz who singled to left centre, enabling Gonzalez to score. Mike Cameron took the lead to three when he grounded into fielder’s choice to third,
allowing Kevin Youkilis to score. A strong offence naturally meant tremendous help for the defence which was strengthened by Lackey who left the Angels’ offence unable to even open their account.
Crawford took the score to 6-0 as he homered to left in the sixth inning where Ortiz scored. Gonzalez’s second RBI came in the seventh inning when he struck Francisco Rodriguez. Adrian hit a single to left and scored, taking the lead to 7-0. Dan Wheeler
completed the 7-0 victory for Boston in the 9th inning with his shut-out.
