Boston Red Sox demolish Toronto Blue Jays 14-0 as Jon Lester bags 15th win – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox made a strong comeback to annihilate the Toronto Blue Jays 14-0 in the second game of the four-game series at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Tuesday, September 6.
Earlier, the Blue Jays blanked Boston 1-0 in the first game helped by Henderson Alvarez’s immaculate pitching but Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz recovered well from their lacklustre performance in the first game to score three runs apiece in this battering
of the Blue Jays.
Boston’s bull-pen sparkled once again as Jon Lester threw seven top-quality innings to bag his 15th win of the season. He allowed just three hits in 100 pitches to bring his earned-run average down from 3.05 to 2.93. Lester managed 67 strikes
in this stretch which also saw him strike-out a season-high 11 batters to take his season’s tally of strike-outs to 167.
Kyle Weiland was given another chance to prove his ability at the depth of the game and his two spotless-innings were enough to impress the bull-pen. He went for just one hit in 22 pitches, throwing 15 strikes and improving his ERA to 6.75 for the season.
However, a lot of work still needs to be done to gain a permanent spot for this position.
The Red Sox got their hitting shoes on in Toronto as they went 11-0 up as early as the fourth inning. After an ordinary outing in the first game, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis, Marco Scutaro, Gonzalez and Ortiz showed their hitting instincts to obliterate
a weak pitching opposition.
Luis Perez was a disappointment for Toronto as he went for eight runs amid ten hits in just 2.2 innings to see his ERA surge to 4.76. Rommie Lewis came in to relieve Perez but he too was charged for three expensive-runs in just 1.1 innings to deny the Blue
Jays any chance of making a comeback. Lewis’ ERA rose to 9.00 after this game and the management will seriously be looking to consider his role in the bull-pen.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Josh Reddick smashed a home-run each in the third and eighth inning respectively to inject confidence in the shattered line-up. The Red Sox will now be looking to be more consistent as they go into the third game with the series
level at 1-1.
