Boston Red Sox edged Miami Marlins 6-5 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, June 21 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After the Marlins had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Will Middlebrooks singled to right in the fourth to bring Boston right back into the contest. Mike Aviles hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Middlebrooks singled to right in the fifth to level score
3-3.
Middlebrooks had one of his career best nights as he homered to centre in the eighth to keep the Red Sox in the contest. Daniel Nava drove in a tie breaking run in the eighth to seal an emphatic win for his team.
"I love to see guys growing and learning and excelling at the same time," manager Bobby Valentine said. "It's, I guess, a perfect combination."
"It really hasn't been bad" as a part-time player, Middlebrooks said in a post game interview. "I knew that was going to be my role and I just try to accept it."
"When we were called up here we wanted to gain (the club's) trust and let them know that we can come through and help them win," he added. "So it's good to see it happen."
With their win, the Red Sox have now improved their record to 36-33 and they are now just five games behind the American League East Division leaders New York Yankees.
There is no denying the fact the Red Sox some of the best hitters and pitchers on their roster and it will be interesting to see if they narrow down the gap between themselves and the Yankees before the All Star Break.
Throughout the season, Boston used their home conditions to great effect to outclass their opponents in finer details of the game. Despite making a number of errors in series opener, Bobby Valentine and company managed to secure a close 7-5 win.
The offensive outburst helped the Red Sox hammer Miami in second game to take a decisive 2-0 series lead. Showing great pressure handling abilities, the Red Sox shocked the Marlins on Thursday to earn a deserving series sweep.
