Boston Red Sox edge Seattle Mariners 2-1 at Safeco Field – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox edged Seattle Mariners 2-1 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, July 1 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Bobby Valentine and company showed quality pressure handling ability in a thrilling finale as they improved their record to 42-37. Credit must be given to the Red Sox for improving their game-play significantly over the last few weeks.
In a game that was played on an extremely competitive note, Ichiro Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly to left in the third inning to give Seattle an early lead. With Mariners leading 1-0 at the end of seventh, it seemed the Red Sox might not find a way back into
the contest.
"I felt like there were 50 outfielders and a lot of infielders," Pedroia said. "I was hitting the ball good, just right to them. It's frustrating. (But I) put a good swing on it, felt good."
Dustin Pedroia turned it around for the Red Sox as he homered to left in the eighth inning against starter Jason Vargas to level the score and force the battle into the extra inning. David Ortiz drove in a go ahead run in the tenth inning as the Red Sox
clinched a memorable victory.
"They were pitching pretty well," Ortiz said. "You have to pitch extremely well to stop our offense, and they did."
Relief pitcher Vicente Padilla picked up his second win of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Red Sox win on Sunday evening was their sixth in last 10 games and it will be interesting to see if they continue the good work to replace the league leaders New York Yankees.
"When you make the starting pitcher throw 100 pitches in 4 1/3 you've got to do a h**l of a lot more than that," Wedge said.
Seattle, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the outcome of the series. After shutting out Boston in the series opener, Manager Eric Wedge was expecting the bullpen to continue their domination but that did not turn out to be the case.
