Boston Red Sox edge past Baltimore Orioles 2-1 in series finale – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox managed to avoid a humiliating series sweep as they edged past the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 23 in the finale of their three match series.
Orioles secured comfortable victories in the first two games of the series and they were looking to wrap up a memorable series sweep at Fenway Park.
Credit should be given to the Red Sox for showing excellent fighting skills under pressure to avoid another embarrassing loss. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can take the momentum into their next series to give the fans something to cheer about.
Red Sox’s pitching rotation in particular displayed some top quality throwing skills to make quick work of Orioles’ batting line-up. Starting pitcher Felix Doubront led from the front as he gave up just four hits and one run in seven solid innings to lay
the foundations of Red Sox’s triumph.
Striking-out 11 batters, he looked on top of his game-play on Sunday. Relief pitchers Junichi Tazawa and Andrew Bailey combined to pitch two scoreless innings to help Boston prevail in a nail biting encounter.
"I like to work fast, but sometimes I work too quickly and get ahead of myself," Bailey said at the end of the contest. "Today I was able to slow myself down and make the pitches when I needed to."
Doubront was very happy with his performance in a game that was important for the Red Sox. Surely, he will be looking to continue his good work on his next appearance.
"I didn't really know where I was, actually. I thought that the ball was in front of the pole after I had caught it," Ross said in a post game interview. "I ran in and somebody was like 'You just robbed a home run.' I was like 'I did? All right. Cool.'"
Danny Valencia provided Red Sox with an excellent start as he grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop in the fourth. Cody Ross delivered the tie breaking single in the eighth with a double to left.
