Boston Red Sox edge past Detroit Tigers, 4-3 – MLB Update
The batters and pitchers put an outstanding performance as Boston Red Sox defeated Detroit Tigers with 4-3 at Fenway Park, Boston, on May 19.
The first inning passed away without score as no batter was able to score a run in it. Jacoby Ellsbury was grounded out to shortstop position and Dustin Pedroia flied out to right-field during first inning. Both teams contributed one run individually to
tie the game with 1-all in the second inning.
Miguel Cabrera scored his first run on the shot of Andy Dirks to left-field spot and Victor Martinez moved to second base in no time. While the Red Sox posted one run when J.D. Drew hit a sacrifice fly to left-field and Kevin Youkilis scored a run. The pitchers
again kept the batters score-less in the third inning.
Drew hit a one-run homer (390 feet) off the right-field position during the fourth inning. The Red Sox went ahead 2-1 at the end of fourth inning. No score was added in the fifth and sixth inning from both sides. David Ortiz was the other player, who scored
one run for the Red Sox by hitting a homer (412 feet) towards the right-field spot. The score-card moved to 3-1 after seventh inning.
Josh Beckett also shined in this convincing victory of the Red Sox. He threw six solid innings with an ERA of 1.73. Beckett restricted the initial runs of the Tigers as he gave away just one run on five hits including one earned run and two walks. He had
three strike-outs on his 83 pitches. After throwing six inning pitches, Beckett felt tightness in his neck and was replaced by the relievers, who ended the game successfully.
The Red Sox Manager Terry Francona was pleased with the way Ortiz and Drew batted right through the game. During press conference, Francona said of Beckett, “It got stiff, then it got stiffer and that's not something to mess around with. He'll be OK.”
Brennan Boesch homered (329 feet) to right-field while Cabrera struck a solo homer (366 feet) off the left-field to tie the game again with 3-all in the eighth inning. Carl Crawford singled to right-field and Darnell McDonald scored a tie-breaking run in
the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.
