Boston Red Sox enter new era with Kelly Shoppach on board for one-year, $1.35 million -MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox said a while back that they would be keeping their options open and look into the details of every act they do as the team entered into a new era by signing on free agent catcher, Kelly Shoppach, back onto the team with a one-year, $1.35
million contract which is dubbed around the league as more of a test deal to determine his future with the organisation.
Shoppach has been around the league at the age of 31 and with six-years of experience along with having played with Terry Francona in Boston, Eric Wedge in Cleveland and Joe Maddon in Tampa, now playing under Bobby Valentine will be a whole different experience
for the veteran which he is certainly looking forward to.
"I think it's going to be a great fit," Shoppach said of Boston's new manager. "The guy seems to be a little slapstick funny at times, a little dry sense of humor also, and it seems like he has an idea of how to deal with players. When you're talking about
guys at this age, with this caliber and this type of intensity in that kind of atmosphere in Boston, it could be a really nice fit."
Along with being under a new manager, Shoppach has a long history with the Red Sox team as once being considered as the follower up to Jason Varitek nearly a decade ago, but now that he is back on the team and Varitek has spent 15 seasons with Boston, it
looks like the tables might just be turning around.
"He's definitely a Red Sox legend and he deserves all the respect he gets for all the things that he's done as a player and for the organization," Shoppach said of Varitek.
The deal was kept under the covers for quite a while as both sides were continuously in the negotiating process, but now that the dust has settled, Boston was not hesitant in announcing the news after the winner meets wrapped up earlier last week.
Seeing Shoppach on the Boston team once again will certainly be exciting next season, which brings hopes to many fans and the player.
