Boston Red Sox fight back 5-1 to level series against Toronto Blue Jays – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox bounced back strongly against the Toronto Blue Jays as they secured a comprehensive 5-1 win at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, June 26 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
With their win against John Farrell and his men, the Red Sox have now taken fourth place on the American League East Division standings table. Right now, they are seven games behind the league leaders New York Yankees and it will be interesting to see if
the Red Sox can bring consistency in their results to make it to the playoffs.
Edwin Encarnacion provided his team with a perfect start as he reached on infield single to third in the first inning and third baseman Brett Lawrie scored to put the Blue Jays 1-0 ahead. However, apart from him, none of Toronto’s hitters could pose any
kind of threat to the Red Sox’s bullpen.
"Aaron Laffey pitched a heck of a six innings for us," manager John Farrell said of Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Aaron Laffey. "He gave us six outstanding innings -- shutout innings. We were up 1-0."
Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia gave the Red Sox momentum as he hit his 14thhome-run of the season in the seventh inning to level the score 1-1.
"He's playing a confident brand of baseball because he believes in himself and he's a talented player," manager Bobby Valentine said in a post game interview. "Some things that might have haunted his past just seem to be gone and he's just playing the game
of baseball. Looks good doing it."
Dustin Pedroia had a two run single to centre in the seventh that helped Boston comeback from behind to take a decisive 3-1 win. Adrian Gonzalez doubled to deep centre and Will Middlebrooks hit a sacrifice fly to right in the eighth to help Boston establish
complete control over the contest.
Relief pitcher Scott Atchison pitched a perfect inning and starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka gave up just one run and six hits with five strike-outs in five plus innings. The Red Sox showed some great determination and competitive spirit in the game as
they will be looking to move forward and play aggressively.
