Boston Red Sox finalise interview timing of two managerial candidates – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox recently hired General Manager Ben Cherington in a move to prepare the winning combination both inside the playing camp and in the managerial positions.
Last week, after taking charge, Cherington had announced the shortlisted candidates for the managerial position. Now the interview time has reached as Ben confirmed on Sunday that the team has scheduled dates of interviews with the Philadelphia Phillies’
bench coach Pete Mackanin and Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting Coach Dale Sveum. The confirmation has heated new debate in the baseball circle.
Dale Sveum is a strong candidate for the particular position as he has served the Red Sox as third base coach in 2004 and 2005 before making a decision to leave the club to join Milwaukee Brewers in 2005. During his stay in Milwaukee, the 47-year-old has
shown his ability in different capacities, ranging from third base coach to bench coach. The team then made him a full time hitting coach in 2009.
The only issue is that the energetic candidate, who spent 12 years in the MLB as a player for different clubs, has a lack of experience as a full time manager. His only managerial experience is of 12 games, which he got after the club fired Ned Yost in 2008.
However, he has managed a Pittsburgh Pirates Double-A club from 2001 to 2003.
Mackanin, who has served both Cincinnati Red and Pittsburgh Pirates as an interim manager, would definitely have a benefit despite experts believe nothing can be confirmed before final interviews. Mackanin, who has also been close to Philadelphia Phillies’
Charlie Manual since 2009, has expressed his interest to join the club.
The hopeful candidate has been in baseball circles as a Minor League manager since 1985 to 2001 before joining the big league. Pirates has witnessed his performance as a bench coach from 2003-2005 while he also served Montreal Expos as a third base coach
from 1997-2000.
During his playing years from 1973-81, he was considered an energetic young lad, who played for four different clubs. Started with Texas Rangers and then jumped to Montreal Expos followed by Philadelphia Phillies and finally left the game after serving Minnesota
Twins from 1980-81.
Red Sox has about ten players in their final list, but only two have been announced. The list was equipped with some demanding candidates. Red Sox will schedule more interviews after their final scrutinising stage, according to inside sources. Cleveland
Indians’ bench Coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Dave Martinez and Phillies Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg are under consideration.
