Boston Red Sox finally gets the compensation for Theo Epstein– MLB News
Boston Red Sox will be acquiring pitcher reliever Chris Carpenter for General Manager Theo Epstein in a trade with Chicago Cubs. According to the deal that was finalised yesterday, the GM will now become director and president of baseball operations for Chicago.
Epstein is one of the top managers of Major League Baseball and he contributed significantly in Red Sox successful run past season. However, he will have a greater responsibility to deal with in his tenure with the Cubs, who struggled to deliver the goods in 2011. The deal will also involve exchange of a player (to be named later) for both sides.
According to sources, Epstein had resigned almost four months ago but the process of settling compensation took longer than expected. In an interview, Red Sox current GM Ben Cherington stated he is glad the compensation process was finally over and the club can finally focus on what matters the most (Spring Training).
“I think it took this long because it was a unique circumstance,” said Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, who served under Epstein before succeeding him. “We talk to teams all the time about trades and it’s player-for-player and it’s ... easier to assign value and figure out what’s fair, what’s not fair. In this case it was just tougher because it involved not just an executive but a friend.”
According to Baseball America, Chris Carpenter is the No. 13 prospect in Chicago Cubs. The 26 year old has given considerable performance since making his Major League Baseball debut. In his 10 big league games, he has shown glimpses of his throwing talent. The right handed starter may not be as establish as the other Carpenter playing for St. Louis Cardinals, with some more work on his throwing technique, he can prove to be an asset for the Red Sox.
Making his first Major League appearance in 2011, Carpenter has played 10 games at this level so far. He had a decent time in the minor league system, going 3-4 with 5.91 ERA. News have surfaced that his fast ball can reach the high 90’s. The Red Sox pitching coaches will be looking to work with him to bring more improvement in his game play.
