Boston Red Sox hopeful Ryan Kalish suffers shoulder injury
Things did not go well for Boston Red Sox’s top prospect, Ryan Kalish, after the high value star was taken to hospital on April 21, 2011, following a left shoulder injury.
The player was featuring for Triple A Pawtucket in a recent game and he sustained damage on a diving catch for the club. Though the extent of the injury was thought to be limited, that situation changed quite instantly.
"I know he dove. He jammed his shoulder", Red Sox manager, Terry Francona said. "I know originally they had him in a sling. [He] felt pretty good. But I don't think [we have] anything official. I know probably as much as you guys do. I think that the good
news is, I think he just hurt it. I think he just jammed it. But we'll certainly know more [soon]".
Kalish was part of an injured Boston Red Sox line up last year. The season saw many of the veterans move to the disabled list. The outfielder played in the last two months and punched up a batting average of .252, smashing four homers and driving in 24 runs
for the club.
The rising star is slated to enter the Boston line up next year but that depends on what General Manager, Theo Epstein, decides to do with the club.
Kalish sustained the injury when an opposing hitter, Michael Aubrey, smashed a sinking line drive to the centre field in the second inning. The outfielder responded quickly as he dove for the catch.
Unfortunately, he did so with great force, as he rolled over his left shoulder. A PawSox trainer had to eventually hold his arm in order to get the star off the field.
Bill Wanless, the club’s president of public relations, told the press that the player’s arm had to be put in a sling after X-Rays revealed the shoulder to be jammed. The Triple A side has not put the player on the disabled list, yet.
"We'll see", PawSox manager, Arnie Beyeler, told the press after the match. "It didn't look real serious, but you never know. It was sore. It was hurting".
If Kalish is injured, that will surely upset the Red Sox, who would have looked to him as a suitable replacement in the short term.
