Boston Red Sox humiliate Baltimore Orioles 10-3 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox put in a tremendous performance as they won their second consecutive game against the Baltimore Orioles 10-3 at Fenway Park in Boston on Friday, July 8.
The Red Sox who had won their last game by 10-4 seemed remarkably poised to win another victory here. Although they won once again, the game was replete with both excitement and violence that was seen at the end.
Once Josh Beckett threw the first scoreless inning for the Red Sox, the offence came into action charging the Baltimore starter, Zach Britton with ruthless perfection.
Kevin Youkilis was first to drive in a single followed by the three-run big hit of David Ortiz. As if that was not enough, Darnell McDonald earned a two-run homer that took the score to 6-0 followed by back-to-back singles of Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez.
The early 8-0 lead seemed sufficient enough for the Red Sox as they had won the last game by 10-4. However, Derrek Lee, Nick Markakis and Adam Jones scored a single each in the fifth to bring the lead down to 8-3.
Dustin Pedroia responded back in the sixth with an RBI single. The 9-3 lead seemed irreversible given the presence of some wonderful pitchers the Red Sox pride to possess as endearing assets. Matt Albers pitched scoreless innings to save the lead.
When Kevin Gregg came for pitching in the eighth, he seemed to do something different. However, he failed to do that as Josh Reddick tripled to deep centre to take the lead to 10-3, something that appeared to anger Gregg.
Gregg and David Ortiz exchanged some blows, coming dangerously close, during the clearance of the benches and bull-pens in the eighth inning. The game which was entertaining by now turned ugly with such scenes.
Gregg of the Baltimore Orioles expressed his anger with all fury for the unpleasant scene. “I think you show them that we're not backing down. We're not scared of them -- them and their $180 million payroll. We don't care. We're here to play the game.”
The Orioles and the Red Sox managers had their own perspective to offer. Baltimore’s manager Buck Showalter said, "It's a game played by passionate men that care about what they're doing and we're kind of wounded right now.”
“It was tremendous. Those things don't happen very often,” Boston’s manager Terry Francona said.
After the angry exchange, Scott Atchison pitched a shut-out ninth to win another game by 10-3 for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox have shown once again how they are able to dominate the game and take on some of the best teams in the league. The Orioles will be disappointed as their offence was unable to provide much needed runs to support their pitching line-up.
