Boston Red Sox humiliate Milwaukee Brewers 10-4 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox comprehensively defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 10-4 at Fenway Park on Friday, June 17.
John Lackey, who allowed four runs in the first two innings and as many hits then went ahead with virtually unhittable innings. He was assisted by the equally solid offence that the Red Sox provided in the win.
"That's one thing you can hang your hat on when you're out there," said Lackey (5-5), who is 3-0 since coming off the disabled list. "If you give up a couple of runs, hang in there because the boys are coming. They can really swing."
Casey McGehee was first to lay the foundation of a supposedly strong start of the Brewers in the first inning with his two-run homer. Lackey gave up three hits in the inning and McGehee’s homer gave an early 2-0 lead.
However, Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz scored a single each in the bottom of first inning to level the score on the vulnerable fastballs of Shaun Marcum. There was an open flow of hits in the inning which saw no less than four hits
by the charged Red Sox offence.
Lackey pitched a scoreless second inning followed by Kevin Youkilis’ double in the bottom of second inning that gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.
The Brewers’ hitters, Prince Fielder and McGehee drove a single each in the third inning to level the score in the third inning on Lackey’s faltering fastballs. Lackey did not seem to have firm control in the third inning with the
four hits that he gave up.
However, Lackey remained invincible and emboldened by the equally animated Boston offence that drove runs in the coming innings to obtain a victory. Adrian Gonzalez homered to left in the fifth inning to make it 5-2 when Marco Estrada
came out to pitch.
Seeing the failure of the starter and reliever, the Brewers then brought Danny Herrera for pitching who was not spared either by Jason Varitek and Dustin Pedroia who scored a single each in the sixth inning, taking the lead to 7-4.
The seventh inning also proved costly for the Brewers and Herrera himself as Darnell McDonald first singled to take the lead to 8-4 following whom Drew drove in a two-run homer to have a dominant 10-4 lead in the game.
Lackey kept pitching scoreless innings until the eighth and when Matt Albers relieved him. Albers was equally strong to turn the 10-4 lead into ultimate victory for a now seemingly invincible Red Sox.
It will be interesting to see the Red Sox carry their momentum into their next match-up. The Brewers had an awful day, as they were unable to contain the aggressive Red Sox offence.
