Boston Red Sox humiliate Toronto Blue Jays by 14-1 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox won their ninth consecutive victory on Sunday, June 12, comprehensively beating the Toronto Blue Jays by 14-1 at Rogers Centre, Toronto.
Kyle Drabek was given no time to settle when he came out to pitch in the first inning. Adrian Gonzalez homered to right centre to score the first run for the Red Sox, as Lester threw a scoreless inning.
Gonzalez drew his and the team’s second run in the third inning against the apparently struggling Drabek. No sooner had Gonzalez drawn the second run than Youkilis scored his first, by singling to shallow left, taking the lead to 3-0 for the Red Sox.
Drabek had little solace after the first run that Jose Bautista scored for the Jays, putting an end to the drought his team was facing. However, the fifth inning translated into a calamity for him and the team as a whole.
Dustin Pedroia had a big hit, earning a two-run homer as the aging David Ortiz struck a gigantic hit to earn a three-run homer for the team that took the lead to 8-0.
Scutaro scored the ninth run for the team as the fifth inning wrecked havoc on the Blue Jays. Drabek gave up seven hits in the inning and allowed six runs in the fifth inning that strengthened the resurgent Red Sox grip on the game.
Drabek’s mediocre performance prompted the team to bring in Luis Perez to pitch. "I'm very frustrated right now," Drabek said. "I couldn't tell you the last real quality game that I've had. It's frustrating walking people, giving up hits, not giving your
team a chance to win."
However, there was no end to the Blue Jays’ woes, as Kevin Youkilis doubled to deep centre, adding to the team’s score as Ortiz scored another single in the sixth inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia took a single to score the 12th run for the team.
Youkilis homered in the ninth to take the lead to 14-1, effectively shattering the Blue Jays’ hopes to make a come-back in the game. After the magnificent spell of Lester in which he only threw a two-hit ball, Michael Bowden pitched a shut-out ninth inning
to give the 9th straight win to the Red Sox.
Boston, which had a disconcertingly embarrassing 0-6 start this season now stands fifth in the ranking with 39 wins. "That's why everybody was going crazy when we were losing all those games at the beginning of the season," Ortiz said. "Because you go position
by position, this team can match against anybody."
Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz homered as Jon Lester pitched eight innings to snatch a majestic win for the Red Sox.
It will be interesting to see how the Red Sox carry their winning momentum forward. The Blue Jays put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to contain the powerful Red Sox offence.
