Boston Red Sox humiliated by Oakland Athletics 1-6 in series opener – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox were humiliated by Oakland Athletics 1-6 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Monday, July 2 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Red Sox offence, once again, struggled to convert some easy scoring opportunities as they managed to put just one run on the board. Manager Bobby Valentine will be extremely upset with what he saw from some of the hitters.
Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia failed to make an impression as he went 0-for-3. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia and designated hitter David Ortiz also looked out of sorts as the Red Sox managed to score just one run.
"Parker was able to throw his off-speed stuff when he was behind in the count," Valentine said of Athletics’ starter Jarrod Parker. "He used both sides of the plate with his fastball. A couple of times when we had a threat going, he snuffed it out pretty
quickly."
The A’s, on the other hand, used their home conditions to great effect. Josh Reddick looked in outstanding touch as he homered to right in the first inning to level the score. First baseman Brandon Moss also had an excellent time on the mound as he hit a
three run home-run in the second inning to put the A’s in a commanding position.
"It seems like it's the same game every time," manager Bob Melvin said. "They get one run. Today started off a little spotty for him, a double in the corner, and they score a run early. It looked like maybe he didn't have his best stuff. He then certainly
did his thing."
Third baseman Brandon Inge, who was acquired from the Detroit Tigers earlier this year, improved his average to .208. Inge is one of the most talented hitters in the game right now but his results are lacking consistency. He will be looking to continue his
good form in the upcoming games to cheer up his fans.
Boston’s starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka also struggle to execute his game plan as he gave up four hits in just one inning.
