Boston Red Sox interested in outfielder Nick Swisher – MLB News
Boston Red Sox are showing serious interest in signing former New York Yankees’ outfielder Nick Swisher for the next season. Swisher is one of the top free agent outfielders available in the open market these days.
Several Major League Baseball teams including the San Francisco Giants and the Cleveland Indians have shown interest him but the outfielder is seeking a long term contract which could prove to be a major obstacle for him in securing a contract for the next
season.
Swisher produced some great performances for the Yankees last season, hitting .272 with 24 home runs and 93 RBI’s and .364 on base percentage. Unfortunately, Swisher was unable to put up similar numbers in the post season games and the Yankees let him become
a free agent at the end of the season.
According to sources, Swisher is seeking a five to six year contract but the Red Sox are more likely to offer him a three year deal. It will be interesting to see if Swisher can continue the good work in 2013 should the Red Sox hire him.
It seems the Red Sox should also start looking at their Plan B, which is to pursue the other free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton. However, the Red Sox may be a bit reluctant in offering him a contract because of the price tag attached to him.
Swisher has played numerous times at Fenway Park and therefore he is no stranger to it. Having inked outfielders Jonny Gomes and Shane Victorino and now looking to acquire Swisher, it seems the Red Sox are not done making their offseason moves.
“The Red Sox don’t sound like they’re done making moves this offseason, and they may not be done putting the finishing touches on what would be their 2013 lineup,” Mike Cole of nesn.com said in his post.
I don't think the Sox should sign Hamilton because it would ruin the team chemistry the organization is trying to fix. I do think it is ludicrous that the Sox are dickering over a year. How much worse is 4 years vs. 3 years? That being said, I think they
should sign Ross or Swisher.
