Boston Red Sox interview Dale Sveum for managerial position – MLB News
In their quest for a reliable manager, the Boston Red Sox interviewed another candidate, the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach, Dale Sveum on Wednesday.
Sveum has been the part of the Boston Red Sox as a third base coach in 2004 and 2005 when the team was led by Terry Francona, who resigned from his position after the Red Sox had a humiliating defeat in the month of September. Sveum recalled both good and
bad times with the Red Sox.
"It was the greatest experience I could ever have; we won the World Series in '04," said Sveum, who turns 48 this month. "For being a coach or a staff member or whatever you want to call it, it's the ultimate place you want to be."
General Manager Ben Cherington had a long discussion with Sveum, who is one of the many candidates hoping to have the Red Sox in their resumes. Cherington also interviewed Mackanin on Tuesday.
Sveum has managed different teams and his resume is full of managerial experience. He served Milwaukee Brewers in their final 12 outings of the 2008 regular season.
The position was vacant after Terry Francona left the club. Red Sox were leading the Wild Card race with nine games before entering into the month of September, but the club had a humiliating month with a 7-20 record. It caused them to leave the journey
of the 2011 World Series, which the St. Louis Cardinals took with a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers.
Sveum is aggressive by nature and his coaching in Boston in 2004 was criticised due to his approach.
"The thing about when I was judged as a third-base coach, you get scrutinized," he said. "I'm glad I was scrutinized for being aggressive instead of passive. I am not a passive person."
Dale is being considered among the possible candidates for the managerial position because of his experience in the club. Earlier this week, Cherington stated that the club will interview six to seven shortlisted candidates before making any final decision.
Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Cleveland Indians’ bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Dave Martinez and Phillies’ Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg are also the part of the shortlist.
