Boston Red Sox interview Dale Sveum for second time – MLB News
In their search for a new manager, Boston Red Sox interviewed five candidates in last two weeks, but their best prospect for the vacant position might be Dale Sveum.
According to the recent reports, the Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and owners Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino and John W. Henry were in Milwaukee for a second meeting with Sveum. After five successive interviews with different candidates, the club seems
to have shown interest in hiring Sveum as the next managerial candidate.
It will be highly unlikely decision, if the club finally hired Dale Sveum, who has only one-year experience as a manager at a big league level. Sveum served Milwaukee as a manager in 2008. Currently he is a hitting coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, but to
be placed at such high position depends on the decision by the Red Sox front office.
According to the reports, the Red Sox has not made a second call to any other candidate, except Sveum, who has served in the club as a base-coach from 2004 to 2005. Cherington has been reported to have a keen interest in Sveum. In the coming days, Sveum
might be introduced as a new manager to replace Terry Francona, who left the club after the September-disaster to join the Chicago Cubs as president of baseball operations.
Besides Sveum, Cherington also interviewed Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach Pete Mackanin, Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Dave Martinez, Cleveland Indians’ bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. and the Phillies’ Triple-A Ryne Sandberg. Among all these the potential
candidates, only Mackanin has two year managerial experience. He served the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005 and served in the Cincinnati Reds in 2007.
Until now, in this season, only two teams have hired their managers. The World Series Champions, St. Louis Cardinals will introduce a new manager in a Major League level. They have made a contract with former player Mike Matheny, who, since his retirement
from the game has not managed any club. He however was associated with the Cardinals as a roving instructor since his retirement in 2006.
Like Matheny, Chicago White Sox has also called an inexperienced candidate in the camp. White Sox hired Robin Ventura, who has never been seen in a managerial or coaching position not only at big level but also at minor level. He will take charge to replace
Ozzie Guillen, who has moved to the Miami Marlins.
