Boston Red Sox interview Sandy Alomar Jr. for managerial position – MLB News
Boston Red Sox interviewed their third candidate for the manager’s position on Wednesday, when the former Cleveland Indians’ Sandy Alomar Jr. had appeared in front of newly acquired General Manager Ben Cherington to prove himself the best person for the
open position.
After having a discussion with the Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach Pete Mackanin and Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach, Dale Sveum, Cherington had a long discussion with Sandy. The interview was one of a series of interviews that have been scheduled to
fill the vacant position of manager after Terry Francona left the club last month.
Cherington and Alomar first met in 1998, the year Cherginton made his first appearance in Major League Baseball front office with the Cleveland Indians. Cherington shared his memories of the time with the reporters.
He said, "He didn't know who I was, in '98 with Cleveland," said Cherington. "But I saw him in the clubhouse -- I was in the clubhouse all the time -- and I saw the leader he was back then, the respect he had in that clubhouse."
It might be thought of the reason for short listing Alomar for an interview. Cherington is in search of the right candidate to have both ability to manage the club in the park and capacity to control them in the clubhouse. Among six scheduled candidates,
three have been interviewed and three of them are scheduled to come in later this week. Toronto Blue Jays’ base coach Torey Lovullo and Chicago White Sox former manager Gene Lamont are left to interview.
If the decision does not come with these candidates, according to sources, Cherginton will not hesitate to call additional candidates.
Although Alomar does not have any managerial experience, he has also been called in Chicago for an interview for a possible managerial position. Alomar however has a strong past to back him. He has been a part of the All-Star team six times with the Cleveland
Indians in his 20-year career with different clubs. This is one of the main reasons that the White Sox considered him for the managerial position despite their strict policy of not favouring those candidates that do not have much managerial experience.
"His name kept coming up as a guy with a ton of respect in baseball," Cherington said. "We felt that, in spite of the lack of managerial experience, it was worth getting to know him better.”
Alomar has been a part of different clubs under nine different managers. The 45-year-old Alomar has experience playing in San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.
