Boston Red Sox look serious to sign Cuban defector Yoennis Cespedes – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox are showing some great interest for Cuban defector and power hitter Yoennis Cespedes for the next few years in order to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
Sources have speculated in the media that the Red Sox management, who is also after right-handed hitting centre-fielder Jorge Soler now prefer Soler to Cespedes.
Both players are Cuban natives and never played in Major League Baseball. However, both possess great abilities to perform at the highest level.
Cespedes has a superior game, as director of Latin American scouting for the Pittsburgh Pirates Rene Gayo has briefly explained in the media that he is a somewhat better player than Soler. While this is also the main reason behind as to why the Red Sox along
with many top teams of MLB are pursuing him.
Gayo said, “He has great game skills. That's why I like him. When they say 'play ball,' he gets it done. When you watched Cuba play, he was definitely a guy who had a star next to his name. Just because a guy defects and is Cuban, it doesn't mean he's a
big league prospect. This guy is the real deal.”
Rene added, “This guy is used to playing baseball with Fidel Castro behind the backstop. That's comparable to having the devil on horseback watching you.”
In spite of his fewer time of playing experience, Cespedes has a huge chance and reason to play in the Major League as he will prove extremely beneficial wherever he goes to play in the next season. Experts believe that Cespedes will also receive a big and
lengthy contract of approximately $30 million from the Red Sox if they are actually interested in him.
Looking at his stats, Cespedes, who hit 33 home-runs last season and topped among Cuban players, has huge potential to play in the MLB. He has played some very important international competitions including the Pan American Games, the Intercontinental Cup
and the 2009 World Baseball Classic. All of which makes him certainly a very desirable player in Major League Baseball.
