Boston Red Sox lose to Baltimore Orioles 1-4 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox lost to Baltimore Orioles 1-4 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, May 22 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. With their win, American League leading Orioles also improved their record to 28-16.
Brian Matusz had an excellent time on the mound as he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. The starter pitched with great control and accuracy and he received a standing ovation from the crowd when he headed off the mound. Manager Buck Showalter also congratulated the left hander on his impressive performance at the end of the game.
Matusz used his fastball with uncanny accuracy and his curveball also proved to be deadly for the Red Sox’s batters. He had 101 pitches with 67 for strikes. After having a forgettable past season when he went 1-9 with a 10.69 ERA, it seems things are finally getting back on track for him.
"Felix Doubront had his good stuff," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "A walk and a home run and he gave up two runs. He was battling the whole way. He just picked a night when the opposing pitcher had good stuff and shut us down."
"Those things happen. Tough games," Doubront said. "I just tried to stay calm and go deep in the game. Get a chance to let our guys do the job and score some runs."
"When I hit it, I said if that doesn't go out then I'm probably not going to hit one out," Tolleson said.
In a display of dominant throwing, Matusz allowed just two hits and struck out career high nine in just over six innings. It will be interesting to see if he can post similar numbers in the finale to help the Orioles win the series.
Red Sox starter Felix Doubront paid the ultimate price for his unforced errors as Steve Tolleson homered off him in the second inning. Wilson Betemit also hit a home run in the eighth to push Boston completely out of the game.  Kevin Youkilis homered to centre to score the only run for the Red Sox.
