Boston Red Sox lose to Seattle Mariners 0-1 in low scoring thriller – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox were beaten by Seattle Mariners 0-1 in a lowing scoring encounter at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Thursday, June 28 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mariners’ starting pitcher Felix Hernandez had one of his career best nights. When he stepped off the mound in the ninth inning, he was given standing ovation from the crowd. Matching his career high with 13 strike-outs, he made quick work of Red Sox batting
line-up.
Hernandez tossed his first career shut-out for his sixth win of the season and the Mariners secured an incredible win to take 1-0 lead in the series.
"Tonight is as good as I've ever seen him," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Against a lot of veteran hitters, a lot of good hitters, and a 0-0 ballgame like that, you couldn't ask for anything more."
"That's the best we've seen. He was unreal. His stuff was moving all over the place," Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "He kept the ball out of the middle of the plate. He was pretty special tonight."
"That's one of the only parks that holds that ball," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said of Adrian Gonzalez's shot.
Surely, Manager Bobby Valentine will be disappointed with his teams’ performance in a game that was played on a fighting note. Boston had the better of Toronto Blue Jays in their previous three game series and Valentine was expecting his players to continue
their good work against the Mariners.
The offence proved to be the biggest disappointment for the Red Sox, who failed to post a run on the board. Credit should also be given to Mariners’ pitchers who used their home conditions to great effect.
Despite their loss to Seattle on Thursday, the Red Sox are placed third on the American League East Division standings table, six games behind the leaders New York Yankees. It will be very interesting to see if they can bring some kind of consistency in
their results to replace their arch rivals Yankees at the top of the standings.
