Boston Red Sox lose to Seattle Mariners 1-2 in series finale – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox continued their forgettable losing streak as they lost to the Seattle Mariners 1-2 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, September 5 in the finale of their three match series.
"This was not a good road trip, obviously," said Bobby Valentine, whose team has lost 24 out of their last 34 games. "One of the worst I've even experienced."
Dustin Ackley put Mariners on the board with an RBI single to centre in the fourth inning. Cody Ross drove in the only Red Sox’s run in the sixth inning.
"It should mean something to them," second-year Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "These guys have worked hard to get better and they are better. And they're going to keep getting better."
"It's nice where we're at right now after having a tough first half, coming back strong in the second half and putting it together a little bit," Ackley said. "It's exciting for the rest of the year and exciting going into next year.”
Mariners dominated their opponents in almost all aspects of the game. The pitching rotation, in particular, used the conditions very effectively to make quick work of Red Sox’s batting line-up.
Starting pitcher Kevin Millwood showed just what he is capable of as he gave up just four hits and a run in six solid innings to grab his fifth win of the season.
With 12 defeats, Millwood has not been able to live up to the expectations this season. He will take a lot of confidence from his win against the Red Sox and it will be interesting to see if he can continue the good work on his next appearance to impress
the skipper.
For the Red Sox, starter Aaron Cook had another poor outing, allowing seven hits and two runs in a low scoring game. It was Cook’s ninth loss of the season after posting impressive numbers the past season.
Relief pitchers Andrew Miller and Alfredo Aceves tossed up two scoreless innings for Boston but Seattle held on to their one run lead to clinch a thrilling victory.
The Red Sox will be disappointed with their performance as the current losing streak has taken its toll.
