Boston Red Sox lose to Seattle Mariners 1-4 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox continued their poor form as they lost to the Seattle Mariners 1-4 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on September 3 during the opening game of their three match series.
Mariners’ pitching rotation put up a match winning performance, giving up just a single run to Red Sox’s powerful batting lineup. Starting pitcher Jason Vargas, in particular, should be given a lot of credit for the way he handled some tough situations during
the contest.
"I feel like the progression I've made has gotten better. The last few years I've struggled after the All-Star break," Vargas said. "That I haven't had as many struggles is definitely a plus. I'm able to keep making adjustments. I've been able to keep myself
together."
"You look at how much progress he has made just in the time I've been here," second-year Mariners manager Eric Wedge said in a post game interview. "He was strong in his last five, six starts last year and he brought it into this year."
In a display of some top quality pitching, Vergas gave up just six hits and a run in seven solid innings to grab his 14th win of the season. Relief pitchers Josh Kinney and Tom Wilhelmsen combined to pitch two scoreless innings as Mariners held
on to their lead comfortably to take 1-0 series lead.
Boston’ starter Clay Buchholz, on the other hand, paid heavily for his errors on the mound. His fastballs were very ineffective as he allowed six hits and four runs in seven innings to take his fifth loss of the season.
Cody Ross provided Red Sox with a decent start as he singled to right in the first inning. However, apart from Ross none of Red Sox’s hitters could find ways to score. Seattle came back strongly to post a superb victory. Justin Smoak singled to right in
the fourth inning.
Eric Thames flied out to centre in the fourth to help John Jaso put Mariners 3-1 ahead. Carlos Peguero grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop in the fourth to build Seattle’s lead to 4-1, which lasted till the end of the game.
