Boston Red Sox lose to St. Louis Cardinals 6-9 – MLB Spring Training
Boston Red Sox lose to St. Louis Cardinals 6-9 at the JetBlue Park at Fenway South in Lee County, Florida on March 15 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Daniel Bard had a forgettable outing as he allowed seven earned runs in just over two innings. Bard, who played as a setup man for Boston previously, was looking to convert to a starter. However, it seems he might have to change his plans to keep his MLB career alive.
Starter Alfredo Aceves put up a decent show as he allowed just three hits over four innings, striking out four batters. Aceves is also competing for the starting spot and he will be looking to bring more consistency into his game play to impress Boston’s skipper. The pitcher is convinced that he has the desired set of skills to succeed at this level.
"Physically, I could throw more pitches," Bard said. "Obviously (I) just wasn't in the zone, wasn't throwing strike one. (I) just need to be a little more aggressive early in the count."
"The rhythm of the game was a priority for me personally," Aceves said when asked about Thursday's outing. "So far, so good (this spring). I think everything is good."
Red Sox have looked in decent touch since the start of Spring Training. With seven wins in nine games prior to this contest, things were looking very bright for the American League East team. However, they were unable to make the most of available opportunities in their clash against World Series title holders to pay the ultimate price.
The Red Sox are one of the strongest teams in AL East. Their last World Series triumph was recorded in 2007 and it will be interesting to see if they can live up to the expectations this season.
St. Louis Cardinals, who won 2011 World Series title, have made a very ordinary start to their Spring Training campaign and they were hoping to turn the tables. Showing great determination and mental toughness, Mike Matheny and his men secured an important victory on Thursday.
