Boston Red Sox lose to Washington Nationals 4-7 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox were beaten by Washington Nationals 4-7 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, June 8 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Red Sox were once again unable to find winning ways, losing to the Nationals in front of their home crowd. Bobby Valentine and company have very limited time to correct the flaws in their game play and it will be interesting to see if they can put things
on the right track before the All Star Break.
Washington, on the other hand, executed their game plan to perfection. Their offence looked in commanding form, taking complete advantage of any scoring opportunity that came to them. They will be looking to secure a rare series sweep at Fenway Park.
Mike Aviles provided the Red Sox with a positive start as he doubled to deep centre in the second inning to put his side 2-0 ahead but the Nationals responded immediately, scoring three runs in the third inning to take 3-2 lead.
Bryce Harper had an excellent outing as he homered to right centre in the fourth inning to put the Nationals in a commanding 6-2 position. He singled to left in the sixth to deny the Red Sox any chance of coming back into the contest.
"It's an unreal experience, coming in and playing for the first time at Fenway," said Harper. "It was so much fun. They just have a great fan base and it's just great to play here."
"Obviously, you don't want to go out there and throw that many pitches through six innings, but sometimes they're just going to make you work," Strasburg said in a post game interview. "I knew it was up there, but I had so much adrenaline being at Fenway
for the first time it didn't really matter."
Adrian Gonzalez homered to centre in the eighth and Daniel Nava doubled to centre in the ninth but the Red Sox were unable to overhaul their opponents’ lead. Nationals’ starter Stephen Strasburg struck-out 13 in six dominant innings. Nationals will be hoping
to carry some of their winning momentum forward in their next series.
