Boston Red Sox make a splendid comeback defeating New York Yankees 9-6 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox on Friday, April 8 made their intentions and capabilities known by defeating New York Yankees 9-6 at Fenway Park, Boston.
It could not have been a more spectacular comeback than this for the Red Sox which had started the World Series poorly, losing six consecutive matches. The win was special because it came against a heavyweight of baseball, the New York Yankees.
John Lackey came to pitch for Boston. Among Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, there was hardly any who could smash Lackey who was pitching with extra pace, not allowing any batter to go for a hit until Robinson Cano of the
Yankees struck his ball and doubled to centre, where Rodriguez and Gardner scored. Yankees had this one hit and scored two runs when Phil Hughes came to pitch against Boston in the first inning. Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox hit a home-run to left and scored
a run.
Brett Gardner of the Yankees took on John Lackey of Boston once again and doubled to deep left where Curtis Granderson scored, thereby making enough of a lead on the home team. But having experienced humiliating defeats only recently, the Red Sox had to
go aggressively to cheer the crowd, as Marco Scutaro went on a merciless rampage against Phil Hughes. It was Pedroia who went for two-run double, Gonzalez for an RBI single and David Ortiz for another RBI single. Bearing defeat, this was the biggest inning
the Red Sox had with five runs.
By the end of second inning, the Red Sox were having a comfortable lead of 6-3. However, it was not going to be a smooth sailing. The Yankees’ Nick Swisher struck Lackey, as he grounded out to short-stop, where Rodriguez scored. Hughes did not allow any
of Boston’s batters in the third inning to score. The fourth inning was no different as Derek Jeter singled to centre and Gardner scored off Lackey. The home team could not score once again as Bartolo Colon was too fast to be played.
The fifth inning marked the come-back of Boston as their lead was reduced to 6-5. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit Colon’s fastball, doubling to deep left-centre where Youkilis scored and Ortiz went to third. It was 7-5 in the sixth inning, as the Yankees were
scoreless in it. The seventh inning heralded another grand rebound for the home team, as Boston’s J. D. Drew went against Bartolo. He singled to right and Gonzalez and Ortiz scored.
Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon, who came out to pitch for the Boston in the eighth and ninth innings, were unhittable. Even though Lackey was not impressive at all, as he performed pathetically with ball, the Red Sox batters somehow salvaged the game.
As a combination of some impressively resilient players, and being among the most expensive teams of the baseball history, the Red Sox still have the potential to rebound. No start can be better than a decisive victory over the New York Yankees.
