c Boston Red Sox continued their impressive winning streak as they annihilated the Houston Astros 7-2 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, April 25 in the opening game of their
four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win against the Astros, the Red Sox improved their record to 15-7. Manager John Farrell will be very happy with what he has seen from his men so far this season. The Red Sox gave poor results in 2012 as they finished at the
bottom of the American League East Division standings table. Following the criticism, the management made a number of changes in batting and pitching lineups. The Red Sox now have some of the best pitching and hitting talent in their squad and it will not
be wrong to say that they are favourites to win this year AL East pennant.
Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz had another outstanding outing as he struck out ten batters in seven plus effective innings. Allowing just six hits and two runs, Buchholz grabbed his fifth straight win of the season. The running year is
proving to be the career best season for the right hander. It will be interesting to see if he continues his dominant form to claim his first American League Most Valuable Player Award.
"It's remarkable the timing that he's displayed, particularly after the layoff that he's had," Boston manager John Farrell said. "I think even guys in the dugout are marveling at what he's been able to do, as far as not only contact but
driving the baseball."
"I've been working, just like to stay short and quick to the ball, not trying to do too much," Ortiz said. "And I always tell you guys, I'm old enough to know what it takes for me to be what I want to be."
Relief pitchers Andrew Millers and Daniel Bard also made useful contributions, helping the Red Sox hold on to their five run lead. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz drove in singled in the first inning to provide Boston with an excellent
start. Ortiz also homered to centre in the third inning.
