Boston Red Sox overcome Tampa Bay Rays 10-8 – MLB news
Boston Red Sox continued their marvellous winning streak as they prevailed 10-8 in a thrilling encounter against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Monday, June 10 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2013
Major League Baseball regular season.
The match was played on an extremely competitive note as both teams asserted pressure on each other but it was the Red Sox that showed nerves of steel to outplay their opponents in finer details of the game.
With their win, Jon Farrell and company improved their record to 40-25 to consolidate their position at the top of the American League East Division standings table.
Starting pitcher Jon Lackey produced another great performance in a high scoring contest as he allowed just ten hits and four runs in five plus innings to lay the foundations of an impressive win for his team.
However, Closer Franklin Morales was the star of the show as he tossed up two scoreless innings to help his side overcome a stiff task. Striking out two batters, Morales grabbed his second straight win of the season. For the Rays, closer Cesar Ramos took
his second loss of the year after he allowed gave the tie breaking single in the extra inning.
“I was just trying to come in there and get him off the plate a little bit,” Lackey said. “They were swinging at pretty much everything I threw up there. I was trying to get a little bit of the plate for me.”
“He was trying to throw the ball in, off the plate, obviously. There was no intent to hit him,” Farrell said. “Their guys took some good swings tonight on Lackey's fastball, and he was just trying to create a little openness on the outside of the plate and
obviously the pitch got away from him.”
Red Sox started the game on a very aggressive note. Dustin Pedroia and Will Middlebrooks displayed some top quality hitting skills to give their side an early 6-0 lead. Rays fought back strongly, thanks to Matt Joyce, Evan Longoria, Luke Scott and Yunel
Escobar displayed some top quality hitting skills to force the game into the extra inning.
