Boston Red Sox pursuing outfielder Nick Swisher – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, the Boston Red Sox are interested in signing free agent outfielder Nick Swisher. It seems the Red Sox are not done making their offseason moves as they might need to put the finishing touches to their batting lineup
for the next season.
In an effort to build a team capable of winning the World Series title, the Red Sox are now approaching outfielder Swisher who had a decent time on the plate for New York Yankees last season. Swisher, however, could not live up to the expectations in the
post season games and the Yankees decided not to renew his contract.
Swisher is one of the top outfielders in the open market along with former Texas Rangers’ outfielder Josh Hamilton. So far, the Red Sox have been hesitating in their pursuit for Hamilton because of the price tag attached to him.
“The Giants, Yankees and Indians are all also reportedly interested in Swisher. It’s beginning to sound like the Red Sox may need to start looking at a Plan B in regards to the pursuit of Hamilton, too. According to ESPN.com, Boston isn’t likely to give
Hamilton more than a three-year deal, and the outfielder is still likely to get at least a four-year deal from someone,” said Mike Cole of nesn.com.
San Francisco Giants and the Cleveland Indians are the other two Major League Baseball teams interested in acquiring Swisher’s services for the next season. As mentioned before, Boston is likely to start working on their plan B, which is the pursuit of Hamilton.
Reports have surfaced that Swisher is seeking a five to six year deal. The Red Sox could also consider offering a three year to Hamilton as well but some other teams are prepared to give him a deal for four to five years.
Swisher has considerable amount of experience as far as playing at Fenway Park is concerned. Being a former Yankees, he was a part of several epic encounters between the arch rivals.
As of now, it seems Swisher is going to end up with either one of these teams; Yankees, Giants or maybe Indians. It will be interesting to see what the Red Sox should they sign Swisher considering they already inked Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes.
