Boston Red Sox ride on six-homers to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 10-4 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox turned their game against the Baltimore Orioles into home-run practice as they unleashed six massive homers to defeat the Orioles 10-4 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, July 7.
Three of the six home-runs came back-to-back in the seventh inning after which it was only a matter of time before Boston tasted victory.
Baltimore made an imposing start with J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis adding a run each in the first inning to establish a two-run lead.
Dustin Pedroia initiated the reply from the Red Sox in the third inning with a gargantuan 418-feet home-run before Marco Scutaro and Jacoby Ellsbury added a run each to eliminate the two-run deficit and gain a single-run lead to set the tune right.
The fourth inning went neck-to-neck with Mark Reynold scoring the equaliser for the Orioles before Josh Reddick reinstated the lead for the Red Sox. Baltimore could not score again in the entire game apart from Vladimir Guerrero’s late effort in the eighth
inning.
The fifth inning marked the domination of the Red Sox over the Orioles. The next three innings yielded six runs for the Red Sox, five of which were home-runs. Adrian Gonzalez posted the first of five in the fifth inning which landed 421-feet from the plate.
Ellsbury and Scutaro partnered in the sixth inning to post their second runs of the game and take the score to 7-3.
With the required impetus, home-run derby captain David Ortiz came in as designated hitter to unleash the longest hit of the night at 424-feet, scoring his 366th career home-run and 18th this season. Reddick followed Ortiz to hit his
second home-run of the season before Jarrod Saltalamacchia joined in to complete three consecutive home-runs in the seventh inning. With the scorecard reading 10-3, the game was already over, as fans started leaving Fenway Park with two innings yet to play.
Baltimore pitchers had a rough night. Their starter Jake Arrieta was hammered for five runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. Jason Berken and Pedro Viola could not do much with their pitching either. Arrieta lost his sixth game this season with nine wins to
his credit.
Andrew Miller, on the other hand, shone for Boston with his immaculate pitching. He did not allow any extra scoring opportunities and the three runs he conceded were hard-earned by the Orioles. Alfredo Aceves supported Miller well as his two innings went
clean aiding him to post his seventh hold this season.
Boston’s genius in the first-game of the four-game series has handed them a useful 1-0 lead. With their season win-loss record of 52-35 it seems a distant reality that they will squander their lead. It will be interesting how the Orioles, 36-49 for the season,
react in the next game scheduled for Friday, July 8.
