Boston Red Sox secure a comfortable 6-1 win against Seattle Mariners – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox secured a comfortable 6-1 win against Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday, May 14 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
David Ortiz, once again, had a great time on the plate and he doubled to left in the first inning to help his team 1-0 lead. Adrian Gonzalez doubled Boston’s advantage to 2-0 with a double to left in the same inning. The Red Sox continued to pressurise their
opponents with their aggressive approach and Daniel Nava and Kelly Shoppach each homered for them in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
Marlon Byrd also made useful contribution with the bat with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make the score 6-0. For the Mariners, Kyle Seager grounded out to second in the ninth to score the only. Starting Pitcher Jon Lester also pitched with great control
and accuracy allowing just eight hits in his eighth career complete game.
"When you're working fast, it's a good thing to be able to pitch and not think about anything," Lester said. "Sometimes you have nights like this where things are going your way."
"When you get the batters making early contact and fly balls guy after guy, it helps," he added.
"We're trying to build a foundation of confidence in our team," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "When Jon is out there pitching like that, we feel very good about ourselves."
Making the most of available opportunities in a game that proved to be one sided at the end, the Red Sox won for the fourth straight time to improve their record to 16-19. After losing the opening game of their previous series with Cleveland Indians, Boston
have not looked back.
Without a shadow of a doubt, they are capable of beating any team in American League but they have struggled to give results on consistent basis since the start of the season. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can continue their excellent form
to get over the .500 win percentage for the first time this year.
