Boston Red Sox showing interest in Toronto Blue Jays’ Manager John Farrell – MLB Update
A senior Major League Baseball official has stated that the Boston Red Sox have asked the Toronto Blue Jays to allow them to talk to manager John Farrell about the opening in Boston.
Red Sox fired their manager Bobby Valentine last month after the Red Sox finished the season at the bottom of American League East Division standings. It was their worst season in nearly 50-years. Considering the stature and reputation of the club, fans
had high great expectations from the Red Sox. However, Valentine and his men could not live up to the expectations.
The pitching rotation had a subpar season. Starting pitcher Jon Lester and Josh Beckett had a forgettable time on the mound. Beckett, in particular, paid the ultimate price for his errors, finishing the season with a 5-11 record and 5.23.
Lester ended the season at 9-14 and 4.83 ERA, which were the worst stats in his seven-year big league career. Farrell played a big part in Lester’ and Clay Buchholz’s growth in his four-year tenure with the Red Sox.
Speaking on the ongoing talks, the MLB official confirmed the request to a well known sports website on Friday evening. He further added that the Red Sox are having compensation discussions with the Blue Jays’ officials if Farrell is eventually hired.
Farrell seems to be the best option available for the Red Sox right now. He was the pitching coach in Boston for four year before moving to Toronto. San Diego Padres’ coaching assistant Tony Brad Ausmus and New York Yankees’ bench coach Tony Pena are also
reported to have talks with the Red Sox about the possible opening in Boston.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ third base coach Tim Wallach and Baltimore Orioles’ third base coach DeMarlo Hale are the other possible replacements for Bobby Valentine.
Red Sox’s General Manager Ben Cherington has already made clear that he wants a shorter search this year after Valentine replaced Terry Francona on December 1 last season. After finishing the season fourth on the AL East standings, the Blue Jays certainly
have their own problems and it will be interesting to see what terms the teams agree to.
