Boston Red Sox shutout Baltimore Orioles 7-0 in finale – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox took complete advantage of their home conditions as they shutout the Baltimore Orioles 7-0 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, June 7 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Adrian Gonzalez looked extremely comfortable on the home plate, earning an RBI double to right in the first inning to put Boston 2-0 ahead. Dustin Pedroia grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop in the second inning to extend Red Sox’s lead to 4-0.
Boston scored two on a throwing error by right fielder Eric Chavez and Kevin Youkilis doubled to left in the eighth to put his team in a commanding position. Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz had one of his best career outings as he pitched a four hitter to
lead his team to an emphatic victory. Striking out six and walking one on 125 pitches, the 27 year old looked on top of his game.
"Clay came out, had all his pitches right from the get-go," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "He's getting ahead of hitters and his ball's moving so much, a lot of hitters are swinging early in the count because they don't want to get behind with that
curveball that he has."
"I don't know. They sort of gave it to me the last two times I've faced them," Buchholz said. "You face these guys a lot. All of our starters do. It's like a chess match sort of."
Bobby Valentine and company paid the ultimate price for their unforced errors in the opening two games of the series. However, they executed their game plan to perfection on Thursday evening to improve their record to 29-29.
The Orioles, on the other hand, looked out of sorts in a game that turned out to be very one sided. The offence failed to convert some easy scoring opportunities and the Red Sox secured a comfortable 7-0. Despite their loss to the Red Sox, Baltimore are
still sitting at the top of American League East standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can bounce back in their next series.
