Boston Red Sox stun Baltimore Orioles 6-5 - MLB Update
Boston Red Sox stunned Baltimore Orioles 6-5 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, May 23 in the decisive finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Chris Davis provided the Orioles with an excellent start as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the first inning and Xavier Avery scored the first run. Scott Podsednik brought the Red Sox right back into the game with some top quality hitting in the second inning to level score 1-1.
Daniel Nava and Kelly Shoppach changed the complexion of the game completely with a home run each in the sixth inning. Podsednik homered in the eighth to give the Red Sox a crucial 6-4 lead and although Wilson Betemit ended the game strongly for the Orioles, the Red Sox held on to their slim lead to stun their rivals.
"Amazing effort by a group of fabulous professionals who played through a lot of adversity -- time zones, weather, travel," Valentine said. "They did one heck of a job winning the last two series. Going home at .500 is a feather in their cap."
"The top part of the lineup has been doing so much work in 20 days, they were a little under the (weather) today," manager Bobby Valentine said. "The bottom third, (hitting coach) Dave Magadan has done such a fabulous job, we said, 'Let's leave it to those guys to do it.' And they did."
With their win against the leading American League West team, the Red Sox also improved their record to 22-22. It was only the second the Red Sox managed to hit .500 win percentage mark this season.
Credit must be give to Bobby Valentine and company for the way they have bounced back in the last couple of weeks. They were placed poorly at 12-19 not too long ago and it looked as if it will be extremely tough for them to find winning ways.
Showing great composure and bouncebackability on Wednesday evening, it seems the Red Sox have finally managed to put things on the right track and it will be interesting to see if they can put themselves in a commanding position before the All Star Break.
