Mike Aviles, once again, made a handy contribution for his team as he singled to centre in the third to break the deadlock. Dustin Pedroia also had a great time on the plate as he hit a sacrifice fly to double Boston’s advantage to 2-0 in the third but the star of the show was David Ortiz who hit a towering home run in the sixth to turn things around for the Red Sox.
Will Middlebrooks, Daniel Nava, Adrian Gonzalez also played a crucial role in helping the Red Sox come back from behind to clinch a thrilling win.
"We start the rally afterward," Ortiz said answering a question. "Somebody got to start it, right?"
"We hit a couple of balls good early, but nothing like that," Pedroia said. "That definitely jump-starts your offense and makes you feel like we can get to them."
The Red Sox will take a lot of confidence from their win against the Orioles. They were 12-18 after losing to Kansas City Royals on May 9. However, Bobby Valentine and company have up their game play considerably since then winning nine out of their last 11 games.
In a game that was played on an extremely fighting, the Red Sox handled the pressure brilliantly to end up on the winning side. The Red Sox are now .500 in terms of win percentage for the first time this season.
"It's definitely not a goal, but it's better than being under .500," manager Bobby Valentine said in a post game interview.
Baltimore, on the other hand, will be disappointed to lose the game after they earned an emphatic series win against Washington Nationals. Buck Showalter and his men surprised many of us this season with high quality of their game play and they are expected to make a strong come back in the second game.
