Boston Red Sox stun New York Yankees 3-2 in series finale – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 3-2 in a nail biting thriller at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Ryan Sweeney provided the Red Sox with an excellent start as he doubled to deep left in the second inning. Adrian Gonzalez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia scored to put their side 2-0 ahead.
Yankees were also determined to find a way back into the contest. Russell Martin displayed some top quality hitting skills as he homered to right in the seventh and singled to centre in the eighth to level the score, taking the match into the extra inning.
Shortstop Pedro Ciriaco stunned the home crowd with a tie breaking single in the 10th and the Red Sox upset the Yankees. Red Sox starter Felix Doubront gave up just a run with eight strike-outs and Alfredo Aceves gave up just a hit in 2.1 innings
for his second win of the season.
"We're trying to win series now," Valentine said in a post game interview. "We did it the hard way. After losing the first, we battled in two tough games. I'm proud of the guys. That's a great effort."
"He heard it. That's what I take exception with," Valentine said of an umpiring decision that involved Will Middlebrooks. "No one saw anything. He just heard it. What are you going to do? I'm not going to say anything that's going to get me fined any more."
Credit should be given to the Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine for executing his game plan to perfection. Boston were annihilated by New York in their home series and the way they bounced back at Yankee Stadium certainly shows just what they are capable of.
With their win over the Yankees, the Red Sox, once again hit the .500 win percentage mark. It will be interesting to see if Valentine and company can extend their winning streak in the upcoming games to have any chance of seizing one of the two wild card
spots.
