Boston Red Sox suffer embarrassing series loss against New York Yankees – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox suffered a humiliating series defeat as they lost to New York Yankees 3-7 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, July 8 in the fourth game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine, on the other hand, will be looking for a place to hide right now. After all the hype before the series, it’s time for the skipper to look into his strategies as his team failed to live to their immense potential.
After New York took an early 2-0 lead, Cody Ross reached first base safely on an error by short-stop Derek Jeter to keep the Red Sox in the game. David Ortiz doubled to deep-centre to reduce Yankees’ lead to 3-2. Mike Aviles had an RBI double to left in
the eighth to add spice to the proceedings but he could not stop the inevitable.
Starting pitcher Jon Lester also had a poor outing as he gave up five runs on nine hits in just over four innings to take his sixth loss of the season.
"I'm getting aggressive, trying to get ahead on the count early and then trying to put them away," said Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova, who struck-out ten in six solid innings.
"I just have to go and relax and not think about my first half," Lester said.
"It's tough to be behind, that's for sure," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said.
With an incredible 52-33 record, the Yankees are having one of the finest seasons in MLB history. In a very tough American League East Division, they are seven games ahead of the second placed Baltimore Orioles.
Credit should be given to the bullpen for producing masterful performances even in the most difficult of times. Earlier this month, the Yankees lost two of their finest pitchers in C.C. Sabathia and Andy Pettitte and it seemed they may not be able to continue
their hot winning streak.
However, since then, the likes of Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, Hiroki Kuroda and Freddy Garcia have taken the responsibility to make things happen. The Yankees will be very happy with their performance as it looks like they are building up some serious momentum
for the second half of the regular season.
