Boston Red Sox to choose between Bobby Valentine, Gene Lamont as new team manager -MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox have been without a team manager for quite some time now, nearly two months and have lost a number of coaching members during the offseason due to not having a stable staff to work with.
The Red Sox hope to end their managerial woes after selecting from a shortlisted list of two people, whose names in Major League Baseball (MLB) are more than recognisable, but in the end, it will be tough to select just one.
Boston announced their final two candidates to be Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont, out of which, one will be the teams’ new general manager to be announced in the upcoming days after the selection is made final.
The surprising thing was that neither of the shortlisted finalists has received any sort of offer from the Boston Red Sox as they were approached in the recent days.
"I haven't heard a word," Valentine said in a text message.
Lamont on the other hand, said that he has not spoken with the Red Sox general manager, Ben Cherington, since their meeting earlier on Wednesday along with meeting Red Sox majority owner, John Henry, in Boca Raton, Florida and Red Sox chairman, Tom Werner.
"I've talked to people,'' Lamont said, "but I don't know what their time frame is now.''
Both finalists have experience managing teams in the MLB before, as Valentine was the manager for the Texas Rangers and New York Mets for nearly 15 seasons and had a significant run with both clubs but never a World Series championship.
Lamont has not been in the business since 2000, but when asked whether he would want to manage again or not, the answer was in a positive.
"I don't really know. One thing may be that I don't toot my horn about myself. I thought maybe somebody would call. I wanted to manage, don't get me wrong, but the opportunity didn't come.
It is still unclear who will be chosen as the manager by the Boston Red Sox for their team, but one thing is for sure at the moment, which is that the MLB team will not do this in haste, but will take its time on selecting the right candidate.
