Boston Red Sox topple Atlanta Braves 9-4 to win series – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox continued their impressive winning run as they toppled Atlanta Braves 9-4 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, June 24 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Cody Ross provided the Red Sox with an excellent start. With bases loaded, he belted a mighty three run home run in the fourth inning to put his team 3-0 ahead. Adrian Gonzalez also joined the party as he homered to left in the same inning to give Boston a four run lead.
Third baseman Will Middlebrooks hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Ross hit his second home run of the game in the fifth to preserve Red Sox’s four run lead.
Daniel Nava doubled to deep centre in the sixth and Kevin Youkilis tripled to deep right centre in the seventh to end the game on a strong note.
According to sources, Youkilis was traded for starter Zach Stewart on Sunday and with Youkilis, the Red Sox sent around $5-6 million to Chicago White Sox to pay the remainder of his salary.
Braves starter Mike Minor took his sixth loss of the season, giving up four runs, including three home runs in just over four innings.
“He’s got three solid pitches, throws strikes, he’s got a good minor league track record," Ben Cherington said in an interview. “He’s a guy who looks like a major league starter and needs more time in Triple A. He’ll be a big part of our pitching depth."
The Red Sox have certainly raised the level of their game play over the last couple of weeks. Their win against the Braves on Sunday evening was their eighth in last ten games and it will be interesting to see if they can produce similar performances in their next series against Toronto Blue Jays.
Right now, Bobby Valentine and company are placed fourth on the American League East Division standings table, five games behind the leaders New York Yankees. Credit must be given to the skipper for leading his team out of trouble on numerous occasions this season.
